The first step of Salvation is to realize why we need to be saved. If we see no need, if we do not see ourselves compared to the Holiness and Righteousness of God, we can not see why we would need a Saviour.
The Bible says that we owe a debt for our sins.
God is just and can not let sin and wickedness go unpunished.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God..." -Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death..." -Romans 6:23
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags... -Isaiah 64:6

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags... -Isaiah 64:6
So what are we to do? Each of us are sinful and wicked, and the Bible says that all of our goodness and righteousness is like a pile of filthy rags. We are standing before a God who requires a punishment for sin, and we can not pay the debt.
Here is our hope: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. -1 Peter 3:18
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. He was born of a virgin and lived a sinless and perfect life among men. "The just for the unjust." He then died an agonizing death upon the cross of Calvary.
"And he (Jesus) bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him..." -John 19:17, 18a
"And he (Jesus) bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him..." -John 19:17, 18a
He died for you. God placed all of the sins of the world upon His Holy Son, and forsook Him.
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." -Isaiah 53:5,6
Jesus was laid to rest in a tomb: "And when Joseph had taken the body, he... laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the of the sepulchre, and departed." -Matthew 27:58,59
Then, by the power of God, He rose from the dead on the third day. He conquered death and the grave.
Sin and death had no dominion over Him.
"...It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us." -Romans 8:34

Christ died upon the cross and shed His precious blood for the forgiveness of our sins.
He then rose from the grave to conquer death.
Now all are given a choice: Will you reject Him, or will you receive Him?
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God..." -John 1:12
Will you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and substitute?
The Bible tells us how to be saved: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." -Romans 10:9-10

We must repent of our sins and turn to Christ.
"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.." -Acts 3:19
This repentance is not difficult to understand. It is a grief and sorrow over the sins and wickedness that we commit. It is a desire to serve God, instead of ourselves. You do not have to be perfect to come to God, simply trust in the blood that Jesus shed. If it was possible for us to earn salvation, then Jesus Christ would not have died. We need His righteousness, and His holiness.

his faith is counted for righteousness." -Romans 4:5
